Course description

This program will expose students to exciting new concepts of Eastern and Western European theatre through physically, vocally and psychologically intensive workshop situations. It will give students an opportunity to meet and work with practicing artists who hold to the highest standards of discipline and practice within their cultures.

During the first 10 days of the trip, students will be living in Belgrade, Serbia while doing intensive study (seven hours a day) of Grotowski/Barba based acting with the world renowned DAH Theatre. In the evenings students will attend lectures, demonstrations and performances. On the final day in Belgrade they will take a silent walk through the ruins of Kalemegdan — an ancient Roman/Turkish fortress that overlooks the intersection of the Danube and Sava Rivers. In Belgrade, students will live with families and learn about their culture.

On June 31 students will fly to England and travel to Kinnersley Castle where they will live for the next week and attend daily workshops titled, “Voices of the Archetypes of Myths and Legends” with Frankie Armstrong. At the end of the workshops students will travel to either London or Stratford-Upon-Avon to attend theatrical performances before flying back home.

The program will be led by Janet Rodgers of the VCU Department of Theatre. This is her fifth time leading a VCU study abroad program. She will be assisted by Melissa Carroll-Jackson, also of the Department of Theatre.
