The Office of International Education and the VCU School of World Studies, in conjunction with the University for Foreigners of Perugia, Italy, are pleased to offer an innovative summer study-abroad program in Italy. The program offers an exceptional opportunity to immerse yourself in Italian language and culture during your month in beautiful medieval Perugia. Participants will have a classroom-based language-learning experience with Italian natives from Perugia, as well as a cultural learning experience through lectures, tours and traditional Italian activities.
Course and credit options
6 or 7 VCU credits
All participants will register for World 203 The Italian Genius for 3 credits and will have the additional choice of one of the following courses: ITAL 101 Elementary Italian (4 credits), ITAL 102 Elementary Italian (4 credits), ITAL 201 Intermediate Italian, ITAL 205 Intermediate Italian Conversation, ITAL 300 Advanced Grammar and Conversation or ITAL 330 Survey of Literature (3 credits).
Course description
World 203 The Italian Genius: This course introduces students to the rich history and world influence of Italy’s heritage. It will trace the development of Italian culture from its origin to the modern age. The course is taught in English.
Italian language courses: Students will take intensive Italian instruction during the four weeks through the University for Foreigners of Perugia, at the beginner, intermediate or advanced levels. Three to four credits are available in Italian language and literature. Intermediate and advanced courses require attendance in grammar, syntax, reading, conversation and literature classes. Prerequisites apply.
The program is directed by Cinzia Corubolo, a professor of Italian in the VCU School of World Studies. This is her sixth year leading the Perugia program. The program also is assisted by the European Heritage Institute under the leadership of Italian professor Dr. Antonio Masullo, formerly of the VCU School of World Studies.

Program cost
$2,775 plus airfare and applicable VCU tuition
The program fee is $2,775 and includes the following:

The following are not included in the program fee. Students are responsible for:
- Airfare
- VCU tuition and fees
- Most meals
- Passport application fee
- Visa fee
- Personal expenses during the program (estimated at $1,800)
- Anything not specifically mentioned above
Please budget for these additional expenses.
Airfare
Airfare is not included. Participants are responsible for their own round-trip travel arrangements from the U.S. to Italy. Professor Corubolo will assist participants in identifying a low-cost option for the group. For best fares you should purchase your ticket no later than May 1.
Eligibility
Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA to participate in this program.
While in Italy
There will be a day trip to Siena and Cortona, or Florence, and one to Assisi, some of the most beautiful towns of the wonderful Tuscany region. There will also be two weekend trips: one will go to Naples, Pompeii and Capri. On Saturday participants will bask in the hustle and bustle of Naples. Then, we will set our clocks back to 79 A.D. and take a stroll through the streets of Pompeii, where participants will see that the city of the dead is still very much alive. We will spend the night at a three-star hotel on the Amalfi Coast. Sunday will be spent in Capri, where you will enjoy the romantic and relaxing atmosphere of the island of love, have a chance to brush against the rich and famous and take a plunge in the deep blue sea. The second weekend trip will be to Venice. The last two days of the program will be spent in Rome.
Participants share private apartments with cooking facilities. Meals, which are not included in the program cost, may be purchased at the university cafeteria for approximately $6 a meal.
Student visa: Participants will need to obtain a student visa for entrance into Italy for the summer program. Students will need to come to the Education Abroad Office no later than Monday, April 26, 2010, in order to turn in all necessary documents, which we will send on your behalf to the Italian Consulate in Philadelphia.
Please review the following required items:
- Visa application form: you will fill this out when you come to the Education Abroad Office
- Two passport photos: you must bring two identical passport photos; you can get these from CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens, etc.
- Your original passport: your actual passport booklet not a photocopy (we can make a photocopy for you here, if you’d like)
- Proof of means of support: a bank statement in your name or a credit card statement in your name showing that you have at least $500 in your name.

Tuition and fees is charged separately and additionally at standard VCU rates for in-state students and at a 40 percent discount for out-of-state students. Estimated costs, based on current tuition per credit and fees, are as follows: undergraduate in-state, $221 (per 3 credit class: $655); undergraduate out-of-state, $439 (per 3 credit class: $1,309); graduate in-state, $455 (per 3 credit class: $1,357); graduate out-of-state, $567 ($1,693 per 3 credit class).

If you have a passport, make sure it is valid for at least six months after your return date. If you do not have a passport, apply early because the processing time can take up to eight weeks. For more information on how to apply for a passport, visit http://travel.state.gov.
The non-refundable registration fee of $250 is due upon registration. The balance of the program fee and the tuition costs (based on the number of credits taken) will be billed separately through VCU Student Accounting after May 2010 (both amounts may be billed at the same time).
All withdrawals must be made in writing and submitted to the Director of Education Abroad.
The refund schedule is as follows:
- Prior to April 15: I am eligible for a refund of the portionof the program fee that has not already been expended in payment of costs outlined on the individual program sheet in support of my participation. I understand that, as the spring progresses, the charges may reflect an increasing amount, depending on what payments have been made on my behalf. After April 15, I understand that the entire program fee may be due. I understand that the refund amount cannot be determined until I formally submit written withdrawal from the program.
- After April 15: I will be responsible to pay the entire program fee. In the event of an unexpected emergency that occurs after April 15, I understand that I must provide a physician’s certification that my condition prohibits participation. In this case, refunds will be limited to recoverable expenses.
